Lesson Plan: Introduction to Addition & Subtraction

Age Group: 3-5 years 
Duration: 45 minutes  

Objective: The activity will guide the children to recognize patterns and help them understand and carry out addition and subtraction.

Te Whāriki learning outcomes fulfilled:

1) Using a range of strategies for reasoning and problem solving.

2) Make sense of their world by generating and refining working theories.

3) Recoganizing mathematical symbols and concepts and using them with enjoyment, meaning & purpose.

The New Zealand Curriculum:

1) Join and separate groups of up to a total of 20 objects and find the difference between groups by grouping and counting.

2) Count forwards or backwards in 1s, 2s, and 10s from any whole number between 1 and 20.

3) Explore addition facts up to 10 and their corresponding subtraction facts (families of facts), including doubles and halves.
