Lesson Plan: Construction

Age Group: 3-5 years 
Duration: 45 minutes  

Objective: Structured sandpit play will allow the children to explore the basic principles of physics and fluid dynamics. In this activity, they will also learn planning and organization to complete the task.

Te Whāriki learning outcomes fulfilled:

1) Using a range of strategies for reasoning & problem solving.

2) Expressing their feelings and ideas using a wide range of materials & modes.

3) Understanding how things work here and adapting to change.

4) Using a range of strategies and skills to play and learn with others.

5) Managing themselves and expressing their feelings and needs.

The New Zealand Curriculum:

1) Understand that technology both reflects and changes society and the environment and increases people’s capability (Level 2 - Technology).

2) Understand that technological outcomes are developed through technological practice and have related physical and functional natures (Level 2 - Technology).

3) Find out about the uses of common materials and relate these to their observed properties (Level 1 & 2 - Science).
