Lesson Plan: Introduction to the Solar System

Age Group: 3-5 years  
Duration: 45 minutes  

Objective: Build scientific understanding of the solar system, including Earth's rotation around the sun and how day and night relate to this rotation. This will also improve spatial and conceptual learning.

Te Whāriki learning outcomes fulfilled:

1) Making connections between people, places and things in their world.

2) Taking part in caring for this place. 

3) Make sense of their world by generating and refining working theories.

The New Zealand Curriculum

1) Identify how the passing of time is measured in years, months, weeks, days, hours (mathematics).

2) Seek and describe simple patterns in physical phenomena.

3) Students will share ideas and observations about the Sun and the Moon and their physical effects on the heat and light available to Earth.
